FAQS

Cleaning FAQS

How often do you clean a Water Tank? The Ministry of Health recommends annual tank cleaning – however with appropriate filtration and bacteria control (UV) this can typically be 1-3 years.
Use a mixture of detergent and hot water (household laundry soap powder will do) to scrub and clean all internal surfaces of the tank. This can be done with a stiff brush or a high pressure jet. Attaching the brush to a long pole may make it possible to clean the tank without entering it (Figure 3.3).
Reasonably high pressure water is best as it can easily remove any debris on the side of the tank. To remove sludge without losing the rainwater you’ve already caught, you must pump out the organic material lying on the bottom using a tube inserted through the tank inlet.
To disinfect a storage tank or other large volume of water, thoroughly mix non-scented NSF-approved household bleach (5.25% chlorine) in the reservoir at the ratio of 1 gallon of bleach for every 1,000 gallons of water (i.e., 1 quart for every 250 gallons of water). This will give a chlorine concentration of 50 ppm.
The presence of tannins is one cause of brown or yellow water that is usually not a problem. Tannins are present in driftwood, and over time they will leach into the aquarium water, staining it yellow to brown. Tannins lower the pH of the water and soften it. For some fish, this may be desirable and even recommended.Jun 2, 2020
A general rule of thumb to shock chlorinate and disinfect a storage tank is to mix non-scented NSF-approved household bleach (5.25% chlorine) in the reservoir at the ratio of 1 gallon of bleach for every 1,000 gallons of water (i.e., 1 quart for every 250 gallons of water).
